“I’m Not Creative”

(YES YOU ARE!)

I have a friend who’s head of a wine department. She signed up for a class to learn more about pairing wine and cheese.

I was excited for her! I applauded her creativity. (Literally. I actually clapped and said, “Way to tap into your creativity! Woot! Woot!” (because I’m weird like that.))

She responded by saying that she wasn’t creative, that she didn’t create the class. She said she was just going to the class to learn.

Nope. I don’t accept that.

Let’s back up and take a deeper look.

Research, exploration and experimentation are all foundational creative attributes.

My friend was going to the class to observe, taste, absorb new knowledge (research and explore) so that she could bring all her findings back to her own store and express those in her own unique way (experimentation).

All of these attributes (bolded) are at the core of creative living!

It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that you aren’t a creative person.

Stop limiting yourself. Expand your creative parameters!

Creative attributes include (but aren’t limited to) research, exploration, experimentation, observing, problem-solving, and seeing ordinary things in a new way. You were born with these attributes. Your life experiences may have tamped them down or maybe you’ve been living out these attributes daily but never considered them to be creative.

Regardless of your past experiences or your previous understanding of creativity, now if you are aware of creative attributes and notice them in yourself as you experience them, you’ll give them energy! Isn’t that cool!?!

Keep noticing and exercising those creative attributes, friends! (And stop saying you aren’t creative! ;) )
